Black Friday Student Deals

So Black Friday is nearly upon us in April 2024 and the Black Friday deals are starting to come through thick and fast. It barely existed a few years ago and now the annual sales day is the biggest in the year – it dwarfs Cyber Monday, Boxing Day and New Sales.

So as you can imagine The Student Squirrel has his nose to the ground and is sniffing out the best Black Friday student deals and listing them below to help students save money.

Currys has some fantastic offers on laptops, smart speakers and small appliances on their deals page
Superdry have taken 20% off everything so look for something similar this year
Argos have lots of deals on tech, home items and gifts so it’s a great time to save on their offers page
Amazon have already launched their deals which are changing every day
eBay have lots of offers and deals on their special page including fashion, electronics and homeware
JD Sports preview sale is now live and has lots of half-price trainers, clothing and tracksuits
House of Fraser has a 20% voucher code and 50% off lots of gifts
Boots have a whole month of deals including fragrances, beauty and gifts

In this guide, we answer your questions about this phenomenon as well as pointing out some of the best deals and discounts to be had from some of our top and most-loved retailers. WHAT IS BLACK FRIDAY?

According to Wikipedia, Black Friday originates from the USA and is a name for the day following Thanksgiving Day, which takes place on the fourth Thursday of November.

This was actually considered as the beginning of the country’s Christmas shopping period. The phrase is thought to have come about in Philidelphia, where the city’s roads and shopping malls would become so congested it was considered a black time. Who knew! For the UK, it was actually first coined by the NHS and Police for the time in December where office workers and students go out for their Christmas parties and have one glass of mulled wine and baileys too many, as according to trusty Wikipedia. Now, remember, the Squirrel only advocates responsible drinking!

Retailers tried bringing it in as a day since the turn of the century, but it has only really taken off since 2013. It has become increasingly popular, with a £1.23 billion spent in 2016 which was an increase of 12.2% and we expect it to be even bigger in April 2024.

HOW LONG DOES BLACK FRIDAY LAST FOR – IS IT ONE DAY?

A good question. Black Friday tends to start earlier and earlier compared to the previous year, as retailers compete for your attention and try to get ahead of the game. For example for 2019, Currys had a Black Tag event which actually started a couple of weeks before the big weekend. They didn’t put all their offers live straight off though and kept some of the biggest deals back for Black Friday and Cyber Monday itself. So yes what was one day of sales seems to have turned into a longer session… as many retailers and shops build-up to the big day!

Some retailers stop their deals on Cyber Monday evening, but some run on until later in the week and even until the next Sunday. It really depends on the retailer. John Lewis, who have their famous price-matching scheme, reduce their prices for the same items so it’s a great time to buy some nice presents there. Typically we find Black Friday deals and offers tend to last from the Friday through to the Cyber Monday.

WHERE TO GET THE BEST DEALS FOR BLACK FRIDAY?

To get the best deals it totally depends on what you are looking to buy. From our research on 2019, some retailers only put certain items in the sale. Others will include everything and maybe use a voucher code. These are particularly good for when a brand rarely does reductions on everything such as Superdry. We suggest holding back some student budget if you are looking to buy for Christmas and use it around Black Friday.

AMAZON ECHO DOT REDUCED PLUS STUDENT PROGRAMME

Amazon has kicked off their Black Friday deals already. The Echo Dot is now just £34.99 and the larger Echo starts at just £69.99. Plus there are some great savings of a 20% discount to be had on Samsung phones, with the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge phones reduced to just £349.99. Amazon has now added more deals such as £30 off Kindle White and 25% off Absolut Vodka!

Plus did you know that there is an Amazon student discount programme which offers extra discounts? These are year-round so whether buying or not, you can still save year-round with some fab offers, discount codes and vouchers released at various times.

SUPERDRY BLACK FRIDAY 2020 REDUCTIONS

Last year (2019), Superdry were knocking 20% off certain lines such as jackets, coats for both men and women. Plus there is extended returns until the end of January. Take a look at what they are offering here. GOOGLE HOME MINI DISCOUNTED AT AO.COM PLUS OTHER DEALS

In a move to match it’s Amazon competitor, the recently released Google Home is now just £34 at AO.com. These are fantastic little gadgets and if you are a fan of Google already they really are invaluable and a great purchase for Black Friday. Voice activate your lights, get answers to questions, easily add appointments to your diary, the choices are endless and this is a really good price.

There are A LOT of Black Friday deals and Cyber Monday sales offers going on at Currys PC World. The best place to start looking for where they are discounts is here listing some of the best and claiming that there are 100s of their best Black Tag prices. The Student Squirrel suggests going to this page if you want the best computing deals, such as an HP 15 Laptop that’s been advertised on TV for £349. Plus there are some promo codes for saving on PC Gaming.

An import from America, Black Friday shopping has exploded in the UK and has established itself as THE biggest discount day in the shopping calendar, it’s accurate to say that all retailers take part to some extent or another from Nike to, Aldo, Currys PC World promo codes and Next. Our top tip would be remembering to top up the standard offers with your standard student discounts from Unidays, Student Beans and NUS Totum to save more. Black Friday 2020 is huge but everyone year it gets bigger and better, at SDS we are already excited about Black Friday 2021 and Cyber Monday too!
