Student Offers for Health & Beauty

Looking after yourself is key to your student health and wellbeing, but when you’ve got a busy schedule it’s often the last thing on your mind, or at least, the last thing you ever get round to actually doing.

Social media reinforces the stereotypical image of health and beauty priorities being long bubble baths with expensive bath bombs, tiny tubs of skin lotions and potions that would break the bank to actually buy, and health retreats in far-flung exotic destinations that seem to involve a lot of designer bikinis and athletic yoga poses.

Let’s be honest here for a moment, this could probably not be further from your daily life as a university student in the UK. But that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t invest some time, effort and a little money in your beauty and health regime, and of course, Student Discount Squirrel can show you how to cheaply.

Student Health, Your NHS Entitlement

Find out about student health:

  • University students are entitled to register with an NHS GP as a temporary resident at their student address. That includes either a GPs surgery on a university campus (many major universities have one set up specifically for students) or locally to the area.
  • A GP can offer free care, advice and support and can refer you for further care and support if you need to see a specialist. This includes routine health check-ups as well as emergency, urgent or specific issue appointments. Most GPs surgeries also offer access to nurses, mental health and wellbeing services and some even day surgery units. All are free.
  • University students are sometimes entitled to free prescriptions, although not automatically as they would be if they were under 18. Those on a low income (as many students are) can apply for free prescriptions with an HC2 form. These forms can be obtained from any pharmacist, dentist or doctor. If you sign up to GP you can also get email updates on general health tips which are worth listening to.

Student Health: What You’re Not Entitled To On The NHS

Find out student benefit options now:

  • Dental care on the NHS isn’t free, but it is charged at set price points. However, it’s not always easy to find an NHS Dentist accepting new patients as there’s a distinct lack of them around. If you are already registered with a dentist at home, it’s recommended that you stick with this practice and only seek dental support at uni in the case of emergencies.
  • Some local NHS Trusts offer free access to GUM (Genito-Urinary Medicine) facilities for services such as STI testing – but not all do. If your GP is unable to offer or refer you for this kind of care, Superdrug offer remote testing by post and have a 10% student discount to boot!

Student Health Tips

A few top tips:

  • If you have an on-site gym or leisure facilities at your uni, take advantage! Aside from sports societies, you’ll also find informal running and sports clubs set up if you look for them. Check out student union notice boards and social media groups for more info. That said, there’s nothing stopping you from taking a jog between lectures or in the morning around campus so why not try to build it as a habit? Also, places like Puregym are great offering cheap prices all year round and might be closer to your student digs.
  • We all know how easy it is to scoff a chocolate bar or bag of crisps on the mad dash between classes when you don’t have much and are constantly on-the-go. Make sure you have healthy snacks so that when hunger grabs you in a spare moment, you have something that won’t ruin your activity efforts to enjoy.
  • Drinking is a huge part of student culture for most but remember: there are lots of calories and fats in booze! In an ideal world, none of us would be drinking alcohol, or at least, it wouldn’t have the ill-effects, but it’s always worth moderating your drinking as best you can. It’s very easy to forget that drinks can be just as calorific as food!

Student Beauty Tips: A Great Range of Ways to Save and Year Round

Most beauty retailers do offer student discounts of some sort, including big high street and online ones (who all have great customer service) such as Boots The Chemist, Superdrug, Body Shop, Cult Beauty, Feelunique and Look Fantastic. Here are some top tips you can follow too, to keep yourself looking fresh and flawless:

  • Keep an eye out for local hairdressers looking for models. Trainee hairdressers have to complete a set amount of supervised cuts in order for them to qualify, so you can bag a free haircut (or half price) all under the expert supervision of an already experienced stylist.
  • Make sure you moisturise before and after bed. The key to radiant skin really is in the moisture, and a cheap one applied well can be considerably more beneficial for you than an expensive one applied rarely!
  • Don’t wash your hair every day. Using too many products on your hair can strip it of its natural oils and actually make it look worse and attract grease easier. Instead, try doing so two or three times a week (dependent on hair type). Shampoo twice before conditioning: the first time cleans out the built-up dirt, and the second time to nourish and really cleanse the roots and follicles.
  • Don’t squeeze spots! OK, so it’s basically the most satisfying thing EVER, we know. But we also all know that squeezing spots and splitting the skin to rid them of their innards can scar. If a pimple is particularly red, pop some toothpaste on it and if you can resist it, avoid popping it. Your skin will thank you!
  • If you wear make-up, do away with disposable make-up remover wipes. Yes, they’re easy after a night out when you’re dying to crawl into bed, but they’re bad for the environment and actually, they do the very bare minimum for your skin. Instead, buy some cleansing micellar water (it costs no more than wipes) and cleanse your skin properly with it. It lifts impurities, minimises pores and is extra gentle on the face. A great tip.
