NEW LOOK – STORE OVERVIEW & BUYERS GUIDE
British fashion retailer New Look can be found in most city and town high streets across the country, and most of us have something sold by them in our wardrobes.
Now a successful fashion chain, New Look was originally reputed for stocking women’s clothing and fashion and have since begun to sell menswear, footwear, children’s clothes, beauty products and gifts and homewares, in over 900 stores worldwide and through their website, which ships to over 120 countries.
One of the pioneers of the ‘fast fashion’ movement, New Look remain a popular brand both online and off, despite the market has now moved more toward online transactions and purchases. ‘Fast fashion’ sees the latest on-trend garments manufactured as quickly as possible and in limited quantities to allow the stock to continually evolve and be updated in line with current fashions and the demand of consumers. Most of the companies in this space exist solely online, such as Boohoo.com, Pretty Little Thing and Missguided, to give them the ability to operate with very few overheads and operating costs: but New Look’s existing solid business model allows them to work both online and offline within the same arena, which is now considered quite unusual.
Unlike purely online retailers, New Look doesn’t compromise on quality for a fast turnaround of manufacture and remains committed to a vehement programme of corporate social responsibility for ethical sourcing and processes. This sits alongside their current charity partners chosen by staff, which are the Macmillan Cancer Care and the Teenage Cancer Trust. New Look also stock a firm range of ‘basics’ alongside their changing fashions, as well as a Plus size range, Tall and Petite ranges and Maternity collection so there’s really something for everyone!
By no means, a premium or high-end brand (not that that means we think they offer sub-par quality, by any stretch), New Look really pull it out of the bag with their student discount offering. 20% as standard both in-store and online really help you bag a bargain, and it can often be stacked onto their clearance and sales prices for even further discounts.
The concept of ‘fast fashion’ can often mean buying something and only wearing it a couple of times before discarding it, but with prices this low, you won’t be too unnecessarily spending – just don’t forget to donate your unwanted garments to a good home or charity shop when you’re done with it, so as not to create any more waste. Whether you’re looking for night out attire, something more formal for a job or placement interview, workout clothes or just something to wear every day around uni and your student flat, New Look are guaranteed to have something in-store that suits you, sir. Or madam.

HISTORY OF THE COMPANY
The now global chain of New Look began with a single store in Taunton, Somerset, in 1969. A graduate of the University of Wales, Tom Singh OBE founded the shop after leaving university and has since enjoyed rapid growth and success of his once tiny business. Finding a loyal customer base as the company grew across the UK, the first overseas shop opened in France in 1988, and 6 years later in 1994, the firm celebrated the opening of its 200th store.
By 1998, New Look had floated on the London Stock Exchange for the first time, but Singh soon sold stakes in the business and it moved back to private ownership. Private ownership worked wonders, and in 2009, just 70 miles down the road from its original home, New Look opened its 1000th store in Bath.
Now, still riding the wave of vast success in the fashion industry, New Look has been sold by Singh to Brait SE for a whopping £780 million. Brait also owns health club chain Virgin Active and Iceland Foods, so they know a thing or two about impressive high street brands. A Student Discount Squirrel approved retailer, we’re excited to see how New Look continues to grow and develop… long may they continue to offer us great value clothing and accessories and for us to show students ways to save!
