It can feel like fashion for men is limited… if it involves jeans, a tee and a hoodie; you’re sorted.
Yet at some point through any season, there’s always a time where you realise you just NEED an essential ‘in’ item and rush off to buy it as quickly as possible – and whilst that might be good fashion sense, it’s not good financial sense.
Thankfully, with a little of planning and smart shopping, Student Discount Squirrel can help you find the latest fashion at prices that won’t break the bank.
In reality, you only need a few of each piece to see you through the week.
A smart outfit for interviews and occasions, a suit, some t-shirts, some jumpers, some hoodies, and some trousers (including of course a couple of pairs of jeans).
With student discounts and money-off promotions at the ready, we bring you some of the must-have pieces for the season ahead – at prices you won’t be able to refuse!
The Must-Have Trainers from JD Sports
JD Sports often offers cheaper sportwear and sports luxe styles than from the manufacturers and brands directly, but they also host lots of promotional events and weekend sales – allowing you to stack discounts and maximise savings.
The ‘Undisputed King of Trainers’, there’s few better places to find your staple shoes.
For trainers that look undeniably sporty, the Nike Air Max 90 Essential range are priced from £100; considerably cheaper than you’d find them from Nike themselves.
It may seem like a fair wad to drop on a pair of shoes, but these really last the test of time, so you’ll get great wear out of them. For skate shoes, both the Adidas Originals and Vans Old Skool ranges start at £60, and for running shoes, we recommend the bargain Nike Flex Contacts, which also come in at only £60.
For more expensive shoes, stack your discounts and don’t forget your NUS card for extra cash off and take a look at our JD Sports student discount page which has the latest on how students can save.
Staple Tees and Hoodies from New Look Men
Totally underrated, your local store may not have much of a range for men but there’s plenty online at New Look Men!
There’s free standard click and collect for orders over £19.99 which is great and saves you on the hassle of missing parcels.
It’s also worth noting that even if you do have a decent menswear selection in your local store, the website does hold slightly different stock – so you won’t be caught in the same garms as everyone else.
Plain men’s t-shirts start from £5.99 and logo and slogan tees from £7.99, so you’re getting bang for your buck even before discounts are applied. Mix up bold bright colours with basics and neutrals for effortless style.
Check back on the New Look site from time to time to keep an eye on their clearance section; whilst they don’t tend to discount much menswear in their bricks-and-mortar shops, there’s often sale stock put online here.
Plus the Student Discount Squirrel guide for New Look will show you how to get the latest student discounts off your online purchase!
Designer Jeans from Superdry
Another brand you’ll be hard pushed to find much by bar small concessions in department stores is Superdry. They’re well known for their super warm extra-lined hoodies and bold Japanese-esque branding, but their denim range is not to be sniffed at – and is designer quality at high street prices.
Unlike many high street denim ranges for men, you’ll find a great choice of shapes and styles no matter your frame. There’s Super Stretch Skinny Fit, Tight Skinny Fit, Slim Fit, Straight Fit, Relaxes Straight Fit and Relaxed Taper Fit collections to choose from, in all colours.
You only need a couple of pairs and can easily get days’ worth of wear before they need to go in the wash.
You need to be smart to find decent discounts for Superdry, so look around online for discount codes, check back at typical sales times and sign up to their mailing list for first dibs on clearance stock and special sales. All this can be found at our student discount page.
Luxury Sweats from Jack Wills
Jack Wills is a touch more luxury than most students would invest in, but some clever online shopping with Student Discount Squirrels will soon bag you some premium loungewear at a price not to be sniffed at.
The best range Jack Wills offers is no doubt their loungewear; it’s sports luxe looks with pyjama comfort… and being Jack Wills, you can wear it pretty much anywhere without being accused of being lazy!
Their sweatpants and joggers start from £44.95 with no discount and £39.95 for cotton shorts. Keep your colours neutral and your branding subtle with these, and instead make a statement on your top half.
You don’t need to scream designer label with JW to look good – keep it ‘off the cuff’ and understated to make your attire look effortless.
The best thing is there is a Jack Wills student discount of 10%. Find out how to get it at our guide page.
How to get a fashion student discount
Even if you do find yourself in the position of needing something urgently, don’t just run to the shops!
Log onto Student Discount Squirrel and browse the retailers. Even if an offer isn’t listed on the site yet, there may be a specific discount event or limited sale on; and clearance sections are always worth a quick check through.
Most online retailers will offer a fast-track or next day delivery and some will do this for free if they know you’re a student (or, in the most desperate of circumstances, your student discount will negate the added price of it anyway).
Take advantage of free returns if you need to and never settle for something if you’re not entirely happy with it – you’d take it back to a shop, so why not send it back to a site?
