Ready to save? Let’s get this party started!
1. Is there a WHSmith Student Discount?
Now there is good news and bad news. It looks like there is a 15% WHSmith student discount but only for art materials and only for those that have an NUS Extra card and are in-store.
We’ve had a good rummage around the internet, we can’t find a WHSmith student discount for whsmith.co.uk.
BUT, there are still ways that students can save and the first thing you can do is check out our savings section in this guide. We update this regularly and have the latest WHSmith student codes, sales, deals and offers to save you money.
Also, make sure you check out the offers page which lists the best WHSmith sales currently on. They regularly include:
- 3 for 2 Offers
- Price reductions
- Free gifts
Also, there is a hidden offers page on .com. This lists the current deals so check it out.
There is tons more advice on how to save though, so keep on reading!
2. Is there a WHSmith NUS, Unidays or Student Beans discount?
We get asked whether there is a WHSmith student discount through the big student discount schemes in the UK including the NUS Extra, Unidays, Student Beans.
The Student Squirrel has been doing the research so you don’t have to and this is what he’s found.
WHSmith NUS Discount?
No we’re a bit confused about the answer to this question. On whsmith.co.uk there is no mention of a NUS WHSmith discount.
However, on nus.org.uk they state that there is 15% off all art materials. We’ve got a sneaking suspicion that this is now out of date but if you have an NUS Extra card and are in-store and are buying art materials then by all means show your card and ask for a discount. If you don’t ask…
WHSmith & Unidays?
At this time of writing (March 2019) there is definitely no WHSmith Unidays code.
Don’t fret though, check out our savings section to see the latest ways that you can save and any available promo codes.
Are there Student Beans Discounts?
Nope, there is no association between Student Beans and WHSmith
Usually you would be able to get a unique student discount code to use at the online check-out but there is none.
Make sure though that you do check out the offers page though as all the deals should be located there.
StuThe savings don’t stop there though students. Read on to get some more excellent money saving tips!

5. Store Overview & Buyers Guide
Now a whopping 225-years old, WH Smith have the experience to know a thing or two about stationery. Alongside this core range of products, they stock books, magazines, music, cards and gifts, computing products and electronics. There’s not much you need as a student that you won’t be able to find either in one of their stores (there’s 600 of them on British high streets and in Universities, and 600 in rail stations, bus stations and airports!) or online through their e-commerce website.
WH Smith is home to a huge range of stationery, which is where the chain’s focus has been historically since it branched out from a humble newsagent. Whether it be notebooks, pens, folders or specialist art supplies, you’ll be able to find them at WH Smith, so they have you covered for all things to do with your uni work. Expanding more to fit consumer’s modern technological tastes, you’ll also be able to find anything extra that you need to go with your laptop or tablet, such as anti-virus software, batteries, and chargers.
As if that wasn’t enough, you’ll find a wide range of competitively-priced books in-store too; of both fiction and fact. WH Smith don’t claim to be a specialist text book stockist by a long shot, but they can normally order in rarer titles, so shop around and ask your local shop if they can find you what you’re looking for. We’ve all found ourselves in a pickle when the library is all out of copies of the one book you need – so don’t risk it, and pick up your own copy to be sure.
Despite their prevalence on campuses across the country and their product range so perfectly tailored to students, there’s no current permanent student discount at WH Smith. Keep checking back here and the team at Student Discount Squirrel will update as soon as we hear of any discounts, offers or sales, we’ll update you!
Whether you have a WH Smith on your campus, down your nearest high street or in your local station, there’s no doubt that you know the brand already: but are you taking full advantage of having this one-stop-stationery-shop on your doorstep? You should!
History of the Company
WH Smith started out as a newsagent in 1792 by – you guessed it – Henry Walton Smith. When Henry and his wife died in 1812, the business was inherited by their son; William Henry Smith; who named the firm and began to expand the company, taking advantage of the increased popularity in rail travel by opening shops at stations.
The business was passed on through inheritances but in 1996, the last Smith family member lost control. A public company in its own right, it really began to flourish when it launched a book-cataloguing system to monitor and sort its own stock: the ISBN system, which is now used to categorise and catalogue books worldwide!
From the 70s onwards, WH Smith branched out into different markets and launched travel agents, music shops and bookstores. This proved to be a step too far in diversification, and following business restructuring, focus was brought back onto the core offering in stores and online. It continues to grow, slowly but surely and within its original remit, by buying into Crown Post Offices that already sit within its shops and operating them itself. Smaller kiosk shops also now exist internationally: in Finland, France, China, India, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Sweden and Ireland. With some careful management and the mind not to grow too big too quickly, or to become a ‘Jack-of-all-trades’ again, WH Smith continues to flourish as a high street staple.
