Originally a pharmacy, Boots stores still often have pharmacy facilities within them for you to get advice and pick up prescriptions. Now, however, the shops have grown to include all bathroom, first aid, medical, perfumery and cosmetic essentials as well as in larger stores home fragrance, food, baby and kids-wear, electricals, star gifts and gift sets like the one for Ted Baker.

It’s a great place, therefore, to shop for a whole range of products; and here at Student Discount Squirrel, we know you love it.

Should you need more healthcare services than you find you’re entitled to on the NHS, many branches also often full opticians labs and hearing care practices.

As a student, you may be able to claim freebies and discounts on these too – just ask in-store and staff will be glad to help. Perfect for that Ted Baker gift.

The History of Boots – A UK Institution

Aged just 10 in 1860, Jesse Boot took over his family’s herbal medicine shop in Nottinghamshire following the death of his father. His grandson, John Boot, inherited it from him and diversified into research and manufacturing of pharmaceuticals as the company grew.

Later becoming Alliance Boots, it became the first-ever FTSE 100 company to be bought by a private equity firm and moved its group HQ to Switzerland. Within a century, the company had become unrecognisable from a shop family-run shop! In the 1970s, the Boots Charitable Trust was launched as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility programme, to raise money for charities and charity projects based in the business’ native Nottinghamshire.

Buying up other small companies, it grew and grew and in 2012, was sold to Walgreens.

Today, there are over 2,500 Boots stores throughout the UK and Ireland, in high streets and shopping malls, as well as smaller pharmacy counters in GP surgeries and healthcare centres.

It’s fair to say now the brand name has become a household term and people often refer to pharmacies as ‘Boots’ even when they belong to another brand or are independent. They also introduced the advantage card.
