ABOUT NOT ON THE HIGH STREET

Not On The High Street is an online marketplace that allows small businesses with handmade products the space to sell on notonthehighstreet.com. So you won’t find it on the high street! A veritable feast of non-mainstream and beautiful homemade items, the site boasts over 5,000 sellers and 20,000 products. From artisanal bakers to jewellers, card crafters to fashion designers, there’s a product for everyone. Not On The High Street pitches itself as an online destination for gift purchases, but once you start scrolling, you’ll undoubtedly see just one or two items you’d like for yourself… or three, or four, or five. It’s definitely one of those sites you can quickly fall down a rabbit hole in without even trying. You’ll find inspiration in an Instagram-perfect package and find the perfect present!

Some items we really like in April 2024 include advent calendars, gift cards, face masks, Christmas hampers, baby gifts, Christmas gifts, gift voucher and health beauty items.

Not On The High Street is a curated marketplace on notonthehighstreet.com, so unlike some similar sites, not anyone can just set up shop and start selling. It currently ranks ahead of Etsy and Amazon Handmade, with a whopping 38 million unique visitors to the site every year. Small enterprises or creators who would like to sell through the site have to apply to the team at HQ and have their application and product range heavily vetted before any acceptance. Lots of businesses simply don’t make the cut, but those that do can start to list their products on the site and make sales through it. 25% of every sale is directed to Not On The High Street as a commission, but also as payment for the suite of business services they offer their sellers – including SEO help, photography tips and a great deal of marketing (you’ve probably seen their TV adverts or had a brochure through the post in the run-up to Christmas, their busiest time).

The categories of products on the site now vary hugely as their ranges expand. Traditional cards and gifts are featured, alongside sections for homewares, art prints, baby and kids, jewellery, food and drink and weddings. Products from Not On The High Street are often shared far and wide on social media (particularly Pinterest) and can be incorporated into mood boards for big events.

Today, Not On The High Street continues to grow its seller partner base and to champion British and Irish small businesses. It’s a fantastic marketplace to find thoughtful and unique gifts you’d otherwise likely never track down; and lots of items are customisable with colour, initial, word and engraving options to really make something special. It’s not a budget brand by any stretch, but the great ranges available mean that there’s always something to fit whatever price range is you’re looking at (and you can limit your search terms on the site by that too).

HISTORY OF NOT ON THE HIGH STREET

Not On The High Street was dreamt up by entrepreneur Holly Tucker – and she brought it to life in 2006, from her kitchen table! A serial entrepreneur, Holly worked on lots of her own projects and for lots of well-known names before she thought of creating an online marketplace. Looking for it to emulate a village fayre with good quality homemade items, Not On The High Street was run from that very kitchen for a full year with Tucker and her friend Sally Cornish taking personal responsibility for the business’ debts and working entirely unpaid to start with.

Not On The High Street has since flourished, and now employs over 200 staff at its HQ offices in Richmond-upon-Thames, London. Holly’s even received an MBE for services to small businesses from the Queen. She’s now working on a small business consultancy and an ‘instant advice’ service for those looking for business support, fast. The marketplace continues to grow all of the time and receives applications from new potential selling partners on a daily basis. What’s next for Not On The High Street is yet to be seen, they are developing their home decor range but we’re sure that they and the makers and creators they’re championing will continue to strive high and shoot for the stars… be they cross-stitched, engraved in jewellery or baked into cookies!
